"Invent for Love" Secondary School Students Invention Contest

Most Hongkongers are unaware of rare genetic diseases. Fewer still have met rare disease patients in person. For many patients, not only do they have to endure the physical suffering that comes with the disease, they also have to cope with society's cold shoulder and the lack of community support.

To encourage more youths to learn about rare genetic diseases and care for the patients, the Hong Kong Mucopolysaccharidoses & Rare Genetic Diseases Mutual Aid Group (HKMPS) is organising an innovation contest called "Invent for Love". The contest invites Hong Kong's secondary school students to invent assistive tools for the patients to improve their quality of living. The Organiser will host invention workshops and day camps for the shortlisted students. Winners of the contest will receive cash awards.

Through this contest, HKMPS hopes to raise the public's awareness towards MPS and rare disease patients, and encourage youths to use their knowledge and creativity to contribute to society.

Entrants are to pick an entry category and invent tools to assist physically challenged rare disease patients in their daily lives.

  • Full-time secondary school students in Hong Kong
  • Entrants should enter the contest as school teams

Entry Categories

Many rare disease patients suffer from joint and limb damages, which result in short statures, short limbs, stubby fingers, inflexible joints, limb weakness, and even the need to be bound in wheelchairs. All these hinder the patients' daily living.

We have chosen 3 common hurdles of the patients and made them entry categories of this contest. Participating students should invent assistive tools to help the patients overcome these hurdles:

Category A: Opening bottles

Category B: Opening candy bag, potato chips bag and ketchup bag

Category C: Switching on computers and electric appliances

  1. Submit your entry form
  2. Submit your invention proposal. Please use no more than 5 pages, 2,000 words and 10 illustrations to describe your concept.
  3. Email your Entry Form and Invention Proposal to

Your Invention Proposal should contain:

  • Name of the invention
  • Description of the invention
  • How the invention can help HKMPS patients

Stage 2

The Organiser will assess the entries based on creativity, practicality and feasibility, and shortlist 30 teams. The shortlisted teams will be invited to join the Invention Workshops, where tutors and patients will provide constructive comments to improve the teams' inventions.

(Workshops will be held in December 2015)
